Social Studies teacher Eugene Simonet challenges his class to find an idea to change the world. His young student Trevor, who is from a troubled home, comes up with a plan to help three people who, in turn are to help three more people. Hence, introducing a movement to “Pay it Forward”.

In preparation for the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, Brother Al, a member of the Society of St. Paul for over 50 years, shares insights into who and what St. Paul experienced on the road to Damascus. This encounter with Christ forever changed Paul’s life!

The Crusades: Then and Now
Dr. Thomas F. Madden
Wednesday February 13 7pm
Dr. Thomas F. Madden is Professor of History and Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Saint Louis University. A prolific author and speaker he is also a respected media expert appearing in such venues as The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, NPR, and many more. His books include the best-selling New Concise History of the Crusades. Dr. Madden will discuss how the Crusades are now remembered as brutal wars of religion, but that memory is itself relatively new.  This lecture will examine just what the Crusades were and were not -- and then look at the ways in which Christians and Muslims have remembered them throughout the centuries .

How Big is Your God?
Fr. Paul Coutinho, SJ

Fr. Paul Coutinho,SJ is an internationally recognized Ignatian scholar and speaker who brings an Eastern influence to Western spirituality. A Jesuit from the Bombay province of India he frequently leads retreats, gives spiritual direction, and trains people to lead the Spiritual Exercises. Fr. Coutinho holds masters degrees in both clinical psychology and religious studies, and he has a doctorate in historical theology from St. Louis University. He currently divides his time between India and the United States. His most recent book, How Big is Your God? Explores the limits we put on God in our lives. With a warm sense of humor and a talent for telling a story Fr. Coutinho invites us all to believe that our God is much bigger than we ever imagined and his love for us truly knows no bounds. Do you know God, or do you just have a religion? Do you know God, or do you just know about God? Do you believe in a God without limits or have you placed God in a box and sealed the lid? Fr. Coutinho asks, “How big is your God?”

The Art of Affirmation
Dr. Robert Furey

Dr. Robert Furey has been a psychotherapist in private practice in St. Louis for 25 years.   He has taught in the graduate programs at St. Louis University, Lindenwood College and UMSL and has written 7 books.  As a columnist for the St. Louis Review, his insights, words of encouragement and  wisdom are shared regularly with the Catholic community in St. Louis. In his latest book, The Art of Affirmation, Dr. Furey states “We all need affirmation. It's a need that begins early and continues throughout life. We need to hear that who we are and what we can do are valued by others. The art of affirmation is more than a set of skills," Furey explains. "It must become a lifestyle, a lifestyle that begins with a decision and a commitment to look for the best in others. In this lecture Dr. Furey explores the importance of the art of affirmation, how to cultivate it in ourselves and how affirmation makes the world a better place.

The Dignity of Persons
Fr. John Kavanaugh, SJ
Wednesday May 14 7pm
John F. Kavanaugh, S.J., a professor of philosophy and Director of Ethics Across the Curriculum program at Saint Louis University. An award winning speaker and columnist for America magazine, his books include Following Christ in a Consumer Society and Who Count as Persons. He brings with him to this lecture a wonderful wealth of insight and knowledge on the subject of the diginity of persons. He states “There is ethics, there is freedom, there is love, only because there are men and women in the world. Ethics requires a recognition of the inherent moral value of persons and the intrinsic dignity of persons.”
