1. What is the tenth
commandment of God?
The tenth commandment of God is: "You shall not covet your
neighbor's goods."
You shall not
covet your neighbor's house...or his manservant, or his maidservant,
or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor's (Ex 20:17).
2. What did Jesus
say about the tenth commandment?
Jesus said:
For where your
treasure is, there will your heart be too (Mt 6:21).
3. What does the
tenth commandment require of us?
The tenth commandment requires that we be satisfied with what
is ours and respect the possessions of others.
4. What does the
tenth commandment forbid?
The tenth commandment forbids greed, avarice and even the desire
to obtain unjustly what belongs to another. (2534, 2536)
Those who want
to be rich fall into temptations and snares, into many foolish and
harmful desires which plunge them into destruction and ruin. For
love of money is the root of all evil (1 Tm 6:9-10).
5. What is envy?
Envy is a capital sin which produces sadness because of another's
possessions and the strong desire to unjustly acquire them. (2538-2539)
Love is patient,
love is kind, it is not jealous, does not boast, is not arrogant
(1 Cor 13:4).
6. Is the sin
of envy the same as feeling a desire for what is not ours?
The sin of envy is a deliberate act of the will, while a desire
for what is not ours may arise from a spontaneous feeling which
is not in itself sinful. These feelings should not be cultivated
so as to result in envy. (2541-2543)
Those who belong
to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires
(Gal 5:24).
7. What is poverty
of heart?
Poverty of heart is a detachment from material goods and a disposition
for the goods of God's kingdom. All one's affections, desires and
efforts are set on God who is preferred above everything. (2544-2546)
So in the same
way, no one who does not part with all his possessions can be my
disciple (Lk 14:33).
8. What is our
ultimate desire?
All our desires for goods and happiness point us toward the
vision and blessedness of God, who is the true longing of the human
heart. (2548-2550)
When everything
is made subject to him, then the Son himself will be subjected to
the one who subjected everything to the Son, so that God will be
all in all (1 Cor 15:28).
