Meditation on Today’s Readings
At first glance, it may seem that in today’s
reading Paul is using a clever ploy to extricate himself from a
tight spot. However, a closer look shows Paul speaking the simple
truth. He is being tried precisely for his hope in the resurrection
of the dead, of which the risen Jesus is the firstfruits (cf. 1
Cor 15:20). Paul never shrinks from preaching the Gospel in its
entirety. Only this time the ensuing debate between the Sadducees,
who do not believe in resurrection, and the Pharisees, who do, works
to his advantage.
It is entertaining to read about the exploits
of Paul. It is more daunting to reflect on the prayer of Jesus,
which in today’s Gospel reaches beyond his immediate circle
to include all of us in his oneness with the Father. For John, says
James McPolin, communion with God means inclusion in the community
within God, through which in turn life in human community is radically
changed.*
