Meditation on Today’s Readings

Taken from the Vatican II Sunday and Weekday Missal
Written by Celia Sirois

The readings for Trinity Sunday, like the feast itself, invite us to grapple with the inscrutable character of God. The divine revelation given to Moses in the first reading takes place in the aftermath of the debacle of the golden calf. The intercession of Moses, God’s intimate friend, prevails upon God not to abandon his sinful people. Then God renews the covenant with Israel by rewriting the commandments on the new stone tablets Moses cut and by solemnly proclaiming the divine name once again. The name of God—“Lord”—does not change. But the character of God as merciful and gracious is more fully revealed in the light of God’s willingness to forgive Israel’s sin and continue the journey with them. The text teaches us to look for clues to who God is in what God does in history.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls Nicodemus—and all of us as well—to look even more deeply into the character of God by recognizing, in the gift of the Son, the love of the God who sent him not to condemn the world, but to save it.
