Meditation on Today’s Readings

Taken from the Vatican II Sunday and Weekday Missal
Written by Celia Sirois

Peter’s question in today’s Gospel alerts us that this parable of Jesus is meant not only for the Twelve, but also for all who will succeed them as leaders in the household of God. To appreciate the force of Jesus’ teaching, it is important to remember that the steward who is set over the other servants remains himself subject to the authority of the Master. In other words, the leader is also a servant, a slave. His position is not a privilege. Rather it is a test and a trust—a test of how well he knows the Master’s wishes and a sacred trust that will require of him a greater degree of accountability. To him especially Paul’s words in Romans apply: “If you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey.”

In today’s selection from Ephesians, Paul shows himself mindful of the ministry that God has entrusted to him. He claims as well to know his Master’s wishes, “the mystery” to make Gentiles as well as Jews sharers of the promise, and he commits himself responsibly and unreservedly to it.
