Rest Awhile and Be Consoled
Pray over words of Christ and Scripture.
Psalm 27
With
the LORD as my light and my salvation, who can I fear?
With the LORD as my life's stronghold, of whom can I be afraid?
When evildoers drew near to me
to devour my flesh,
when my adversaries and enemies were against me,
it was they who stumbled and fell.
Should an army encamp against me,
my heart would not fear;
should war rage against me,
even then would I keep trusting.
One thing have I asked of the LORD,
at this will I take aim:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
gazing on the goodness of the LORD
and seeking guidance in his Temple.
For he will conceal me in his pavilion on an evil day
and hide me in the shelter of his tent;
he will set me high on a rock.
So my head will now be held high,
above my enemies round about me,
and in his tent I will offer sacrifices amid shouts of joy;
I will sing hymns and psalms to the LORD.
Give ear, O LORD, for I am crying aloud;
be gracious to me and answer me.
In my mind I heard this thought:
"Seek my face."
Your face will I seek, O LORD.
Do not hide your face from me,
in your anger do not turn your servant aside,
you have been my help;
do not reject or abandon me, my saving God.
Even if my father and mother had abandoned me,
the LORD would take me in.
On account of those who hate me,
teach me your way, O LORD,
and guide me along a path of righteousness.
Do not give me up to the ravenous hunger of my foes
for false witnesses have risen against me
and they breathe out violence.
What would happen had I not believed I would enjoy
the goodness of the LORD on earth where humans live!
Be strong; may my heart take courage
and rely on the LORD.
