The person who reads the Bible daily acquires the grace really to speak the words of God. But it is to be read devoutly, that is, in the spirit in which it was written, and with the hearts of children who want to listen wholeheartedly to their heavenly Father…. It is necessary to take up the Bible as spiritual reading, as a help to recollect and uplift oneself during the visit to the Most Blessed Sacrament, as the principal book for meditation, and as the divine oracle to be consulted in all spiritual, apostolic, and social needs.

Blessed James Alberione

Contemplating the Word of God

For all Christians, the Word of God is the Revelation of God, a treasure to be reverenced and pondered. We believe that God truly speaks to us through the Scriptures. "Listening to and meditating on the Word of God is a daily encounter with the ‘surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ’ " (The Contemplative Dimension of Religious Life, 8). For Blessed James Alberione, contemplating the Word of God was essential to his prayer and Eucharistic adoration:

The Bible…is the great sacrament of God’s Word.

Within its pages the divine fire of the Holy Spirit burns, just as under the sacramental species the divine person of Christ lives. And just as the person who receives the Host feeds on divine food that gives him or her a strength unequalled by any other, so too the person who feeds on the words of the Bible experiences interiorly the kindling of a divine fire that causes an activity that cannot be expressed, one which penetrates his or her being and spiritually renews it.

The person who eats the bread of life will live eternally. The person who nourishes himself or herself on the Word of the Bible, if doing so with the right dispositions, will be penetrated by the Holy Spirit.

We have to apply the Gospel to our times and give the Gospel to the present world with the means which progress presents to us as capable of transmitting the thought and the doctrine of Jesus Christ. This involves living our own times and making the world aware of the reality of Jesus Christ. --Blessed James Alberione
