The Buttercream Gang

By Kevin Wegendt

The Buttercream Gang is about a group of four boys in junior high who belong to a special club dedicated to helping others—the Buttercream Gang. The main characters are Scott, Pete, Lanny, Eldon and their friend Margaret, and the setting is the sunny little town of Elkridge….

Life couldn’t seem better until one of the four friends, Pete, goes to Chicago for the summer. When he returns, he’s no longer the caring Buttercreamer he once was. Pete soon starts a rival gang, and the other boys struggle to deal with this new dilemma. What happens when a friend becomes your enemy?

The Buttercream Gang draws you into the lives of the children of Elkridge as they learn that putting ideals into action is more difficult than it may seem; but in the end it’s well worth the effort. With a little help from their classmate and friend Margaret, the boys realize that many times we don’t see immediate results for hard work. You’ll cheer for the Buttercream Gang in their successes and struggle with them as they learn the real meaning of friendship.

This is a good movie to watch, especially because it was made just for families. And if you really enjoy this one, like I did, you should see the sequel, The Secret of Treasure Mountain. It’s even better!

Talk it Over

Before you watch:

Discuss the meaning of friendship and the difficulties sometimes involved in keeping a friendship. Talk about examples in your own life.

After the movie:

Loving our enemies can sometimes mean our friends. Talk about whether you would be willing to go to such great lengths for your friends.
