This month’s saint was actually a very busy doctor before he answered Jesus’ call to become a priest! He could have made a lot of money, but his heart was with serving the poor. He became a missionary and traveled from his home in France to the island of Mauritius off the coast of Africa. When sickness plagued the island, Jacques was able to offer his skill as a doctor, as well as the support of his faith in Jesus. For twenty-three years, Fr. Laval worked tirelessly among the slaves of the island and built a hospital for the people.
