Ludovico of Casoria

Ludovico was a man who saw the face of Christ in those around him. He was born in Naples in 1814, and became a priest when he was only twenty-three.

After becoming a priest, he was called by God to serve the poor in a remarkable way. He opened a pharmacy in the Franciscan friary where he lived. Later he opened infirmaries and reached out to the elderly as well as children in foster care, day schools and camps. Ludovico also loved chemistry, mathematics, and physics. He was actually a math and a science teacher for a while. He certainly was busy, but that's not all he did! He started a meteorological observatory, an Academy of Religion and Science and five magazines.

It sounds like a lot of work for just one man, but Ludovico found strength in knowing that it was all done in the service of God and the Church. When he died in 1885, during Holy Week, the great numbers of people whom he helped during his lifetime mourned him.

Ludovico loved all people, young and old.

He used science, math, and culture to teach people about God.

He had compassion for the sufferings of others.

Ludovico gave all he had in order to bring people closer to God.

He loved Jesus with all his heart.

A quote that inspired Ludovico:

"I am the light of the world.... You are the light of the world." John 9:5
