Saint Pio Francesco Forgione was born in 1887 in a small Italian village. When Francesco was a child, a Franciscan friar named Father Camillo often visited the village, telling the children stories about Saint Francis of Assisi. As Francesco grew up, he decided he wanted to be just like Father Camillo—from the friar’s smiling expression to the long, bushy beard—a messenger of God’s love. When Francesco was 15 years old, he joined the Capuchin Franciscans and was soon given the name Pio. The young brother loved to spend time in prayer and often reflected on how much Jesus had suffered when he died on the cross. Pio was ordained a priest and was known as Padre Pio. When he was 21, on September 10, 1918, while kneeling before a crucifix, Padre Pio received the marks of Jesus’ crucifixion on his hands and feet (this is called the "stigmata"). The friar felt in his own hands and feet what Jesus felt when he was nailed to the cross. Padre Pio spent much of his time hearing confessions and helped many people to restore their friendships with God. Your Turn Padre Pio spent many hours every day helping people love Jesus more by celebrating the Sacrament of Penance. This sacrament helps strengthen us to always say yes to what Jesus desires for us. Prayer Jesus, you love me with an immense love. Help me to love you in return.
